Newburgh North Fife Town Hall Steeple

Newburgh North Fife Town Hall Steeple centrally pierces the view of the River Tay and Dundee with the Sidlaw Hills beyond. The Sidlaw Hills lie to the north of Dundee and form a natural barrier between the Carse of Gowrie (and the River Tay) and the Valley of Strathmore to the north. Although not particularly high, Craigowl being the highest top at 455 metres, they command excellent uninterrupted panoramic views. The range stretches from Perth almost to Forfar. Newburgh Town Hall is now converted into workshop and studio spaces for artists. See Steeple Arts.


One of the oldest houses in Newburgh North Fife and one I have looked at in the past with interest bordering on covertness. I am told it was once a Nunnery and certainly it has a plethora of upper story small cell like rooms with a commanding view over the river Tay.

North Fife Flowers March

North Fife March Crocus Flowers. Here in Flisk clumps of crocus flowers are sprinkled about in the landscape and gardens along with Hellebores ahead of the many wild flowers that share the ground. There is a Hellebore called Wester Flisk that has cerise tinges on the leading and outer edges of the petals.

Many Hellebores self-seed very easily and if you can find seedlings near the parent plant, dig them up in early autumn or late spring and replant them where needed.
One key factor with Hellebore seed is that it is at it's best when fresh - after eight weeks or so, the germination rate will begin to deteriorate rapidly. So, if you can collect your own seed and use it quickly, that is best. Collect the seed in late spring / early summer time. The seeds are ripe when the pods start to dry out and then begin to split open. After picking the seed pod, shake out the seeds and separate them from any of the pod debris. Sow as soon as possible afterwards.

North Fife Railway Newburgh

Bridge over the Edinburgh to Perth Railway at Newburgh. The path and steps descend from high on the South of the town across the railway onwards to the High street and beyond to the River Tay. There have been several railway stations in Newburgh, Fife. The original was opened in 1848 by the Edinburgh and Northern Railway. The line through the station was from Ladybank to Perth. This station lasted until August 1906, when the newer station was opened.
Newburgh became a junction station on the 25th January 1909, when the Newburgh and North Fife Railway company opened a line from Newburgh to Dundee. This route called at calling at Lindores, Luthrie, and Kilmany, and was an attempt to provide a competitive service between Perth and Dundee via the south of the River Tay. The route diverged at a triangle junction just south of St Fort.
