Yesterday there was a brief respite from rain, though overcast a walk in the hills into Pitmedden Forest was a delight. So good to exercise after a long sedentary spell. Starting at Loch Mill, puffing and panting along a track I was struck by the vibrant colours of the mosses and lichens. Moisture, perfect conditions.
Lochmill, once the water supply to Newburgh, now up for sale by Scottish Water, Newburgh having first option to buy. A very tranquil spot shielded from most winds, stocked with trout and available for fly fishing.
Tree stump, lichen covered, decaying away proving food for wood wasps and long horned beetles.

Sphagnum Moss thrives in moist conditions, plenty of that lately.
Occasionally one squelches through standing water along the track.
Pitmedden Forest and

more still. A wonderful place to visit as walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers do.
North Fife. Lochmill, Newburgh is one of the hidden gems of the town, it lies a mile or so South West.

Quarry Newburgh, on way to and from Loch Mill one passes this quarry, it ofers good climbing though emerging at the top presents a challenge with the gorse bushes.
Tonight I became a member of Newburgh Community Trust, the main aim of which is to improve and regenerate Newburgh North Fife for the good of the Townsfolk and others. A business plan has been put to the Scottish Executive covering proposals for the short, medium and long term. Apart from the Waterfront of the River Tay it is intended that Lochmill be purchased as an amenity for the community. I will be involved with this aspect and I'm sure there will many posts following on this blog. It can be seen that Lochmill is a very beautiful, enchanting gem of Newburgh in North Fife.
Bed and Breakfast accommodation in north fife can be found at The Abbey Inn Newburgh. It's a few minutes walk from Lindores Abbey, Newburgh water front and park. St Andrews is 17 miles, Cupar 8 miles. Fishing at Lindores Loch and Lochmill is within a few miles. In fact central to many places of interest and beauty.
