Samye-Ling Entertainment

Samye-Ling Entertainment Housed in a traditional Tibetan tent, various performances took place in front of the Temple at the annual Samye-Ling tea party, Eskdalemuir Scotland. Meanwhile all over the centre visitors enjoyed the relaxed ambience in the peace garden, by the stupa or in the veg and herb gardens.

Johnstone house, the start and development of Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre, in shot is the Cloutie Tree. As you enter the peace garden from Johnstone House there is a Cloutie tree with colourful cloths tied to its branches. It is both a Scottish and Tibetan custom to make a wish and then tie a coloured ribbon to the tree. As the cloth fades the wish is carried off by the elements and hopefully one day comes true. People are welcome to take a coloured ribbon from the black container beneath the tree, make a small donation in the box and then tie a ribbon to the tree.



Acharya Nāgārjuna (c. 150 - 250 CE) was an Indian philosopher, the founder of the Madhyamaka (Middle Path) school of Mahāyāna Buddhism, and arguably the most influential Buddhist thinker after Gautama Buddha himself.

His writings were the basis for the formation of the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school, which was transmitted to China under the name of the Three Treatise (Sanlun) School. He is credited with developing the philosophy of the Prajnaparamita sutras, and was closely associated with the Buddhist university of Nalanda. In the Jodo Shinshu branch of Buddhism, he is considered the First Patriarch.

Little is known about the actual life of the historical Nagarjuna. The two most extensive biographies of Nagarjuna, one in Chinese and the other in Tibetan, were written many centuries after his life and incorporate much lively but historically unreliable material which sometimes reaches mythic proportions. Nagarjuna was born a Brahmin, which in his time connoted religious allegiance to the Vedas, probably into an upper-caste Brahmin family and probably in the southern Andhra region of India.


Green Tara in the garden at Samye-Ling. Tārā is the flawless expression of the inseparability of emptiness, awareness and compassion. Just as you use a mirror to see your face, Tārā meditation is a means of seeing the true face of your mind, devoid of any trace of delusion. The main Tārā mantra is oṃ tāre tuttāre ture svāhā (pronounced by Tibetans and Buddhists who follow the Tibetan traditions as oṃ tāre tu tāre ture soha).

Tibetan Buddhism relates Chenrezig to the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. Thus, Chenrezig is also called Shadakshari ("Lord of the Six Syllables"). The connection between this famous mantra and Avalokiteśvara already occurs in the Karandavyuha Sutra (probably late fourth or early fifth century), one of the first Buddhist works to have reached Tibet (before the end of the fifth century).

Prayer Wheels Samye-Ling

Ever revolving Prayer Wheel containing 21 billion prayers on 45 miles of microfilm, 3 each for everyone in the world for a time yet. Endemic in Tibetan Buddhism is the use of Prayer Wheels, powered by Water, Wind, Electricity, hands, indeed anything that will cause it to revolve clockwise, this one is electrical. The aspiration, wish of mind radiates for the benefit of all sentient beings. A static view.

Samye-Ling Temple

On the North West corner of the Temple stands the Mahakala Shrine House. A special protector shrine. Prayers are recited there continuously to ward off and transform obstacles to the practice of the Buddhist teachings. Similar protector shrines are found in Tibet alongside great temples. Visitors are requested not to approach this building or knock on the door as there is a nun there who is in permanent retreat. For scores of years I have travelled frequently to Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre to benefit from teachings and also to assist in building the Temple and the manufacture of craft-work, ritual, symbolic and decorative, latterly from my home in North Fife.

Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre

This stone structure in the River Esk at Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre is embedded with semi-precious stones and was built as an offering to the nagas or water spirits who dwell at the junction between the two rivers. Making offerings to nagas is a way of bringing environmental forces into balance. The point where the two rivers meet is directly opposite the doors of the temple and is very powerful in terms of geomancy. The Naga House also serves a function in balancing the powerful energies emanating from this point.

Close to this alignment is a shrine in Akong Rinpoche's cottage, office and conference room at the rear of the Temple.

Samye-Ling Tea Party

Tibetan Song and Dance at Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre, Eskdalemuir, Scotland. Each year the summer open day and tea party gets larger. These were just some of the entertaining acts. It can be quite a gathering, peers, friends, family, teacher, all kinds. Although I live 108 miles away in north fife, within is a deep imperative to partake. Indeed many come from all parts of the world, I suppose some would call it Karma.

John Maxwell, daughter Alice and friend entertain guests at Samye-Ling Annual Tea Party. It's self evident how happy and relaxed folk are.

Monkshood Flisk North Fife

Monkshood, Aconitum napellus grows here at Flisk North Fife, due to its poisonous nature it regenerates each year away from the herb and vegetable garden. Like other species in the genus, A. napellus contains several poisonous compounds, including enough cardiac poison that it was used on spears and arrows for hunting and battle in ancient times. A. napellus has a long history of use as a poison, with cases going back thousands of years. During the ancient Roman period of European history the plant was often used to eliminate criminals and enemies, and by the end of the period it was banned and any one growing A. napellus could have been legally sentenced to death. Aconites have been used more recently in murder plots; they contain the Chemical alkaloids aconitine, mesaconitine, hypaconitine and jesaconitine.

Coriander Flisk North Fife

Coriander as grown at Flisk North Fife. Coriandrum sativum The entire plant is pungently aromatic, the fine, fern like foliage, beautiful, abundant white flowers, only to be followed by it's mildly narcotic seeds. The greens can be used through most of the year, the seeds are great in pickles and curries, and the root can be used in bean dishes and soups. These plants self seeded from last year.

Ducks at Upper Flisk

Ducks at Upper Flisk, North Fife. A while ago we were given these ducks, there were more but over populated with drakes. Now we have 5 ducks and 2 drakes. One of the Indian runner's presently sits on 14 eggs. Hatch time approaching. Today I attended the funeral of my neighbours, an unexpected end to peoples lives impacts. The end of life is inevitable but this was sudden, in such times the impulse is to focus on the mundane as a way of slowly embracing reality. My medicine was to be with my ducks. There was a time when in between programs that BBC Television presented footage called "an interlude" my memory is of a potters wheel, goldfish in a bowl and now it could also be ducks.
