Creich and Luthrie North Fife

Creich church today 7th January 2010.

EXCERPTS FROM THE 1861 PAROCHIAL DIRECTORY FOR FIFE AND KINROSS

PARISH OF CREICH 150 years ago.

CREICH is a small Parish in the north of the County, containing the villages of Luthrie and Brunton. It reaches to within less than a mile of the Firth of Tay. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Flisk, on the east by Balmerino and Kilmany, on the south by Moonzie and Monimail, and on the west by Abdie and Dunbog. Its length northward is about three miles, and its breadth about two miles. The surface is a congeries of hills of various forms and sizes, none higher than about 550 feet above sea level, some being cultivated to the summit, others covered with wood, and others rocky or moorish. Two of the summits, Black Craig and Green Craig, command superb views of the bason of the Tay, away to the Sidlaws and the Grampians. The Parish is drained by the head streams of the Motray, a tributary of the Eden. Whinstone and graystone are quarried. The estate and castle of Creich, the ruins of which stand on the north end of the Parish, anciently belonged to the Bethunes, of which family was Janet Bethune, the Lady Buccleuch celebrated in the "Lay of the Last Minstrel," and Mary Bethune, one of "the Queen's Four Marys." The Rev. Alexander Henderson, celebrated for his great talents and staunch opposition to Episcopacy, was born in this Parish, in 1583. On a little eminence near the Church are the vestiges of a Roman Camp, with two lines of circumvalation, and about a mile further west, on a higher hill, is another of the same kind.

The Parish Church, which is near Luthrie, was built in 1830-32. It is a handsome structure, and contains 252 sittings. There is a Free Church, jointly for Creich and Flisk, at Brunton. In addition to the Parish School which is at Luthrie, there is a Free Church School at Brunton.

The inhabitants are chiefly employed in agricultural and other out-door labours; there are also a few weavers and other tradesmen in Luthrie and Brunton.

The POST TOWN is Cupar, with Sub-Offices at Luthrie and Brunton. The Sub-Post Masters are David Smith, Luthrie, and John Heggie, Brunton.- A walking postman leaves Cupar about 9.20 A.M., and delivers letters along the route by Moonzie to Luthrie and Brunton. He leaves Brunton on his return at 2.55 P.M., and Luthrie at 1.19 P.M., and reaches Cupar in time for the afternoon's earliest despatch. This has been superseded by a postman in a van from Cupar
though the delivery times have not changed.

The River Tay North Fife Jan 6th 2010

4 pm today in low light conditions, so much so the pic is a tad out of focus. Och well. Anyway the accumulating ice can be clearly seen.

River Tay ice North Fife

River Tay ice flows in the winter of 1980/81 taken at Newburgh and Flisk point. The river being tidal meant that ice would flow out seawards and return causing large build ups, as well as being visually spectacular it was the noise that remains impinged in my memory. the shots were taken on a 4x5" bellows camera on which the lens shutter froze up in the subzero temperatures. I hope the present prolonged cold snap dosn't lead to the same conditions.

These and other icy pictures of the River Tay are available Giclee printed High resolution on archive quality heavyweight paper up to A2+ in size.

Eat right for your body type in North Fife

We all wish to be healthy and we are what we eat. Food is essential to maintain life and if we cook and eat mindfully then this can be achieved. Herbs have an historical root reason for addition to foods, not just for taste but for the medicinal benefits too. I already cook from Anjum's books in north fife and have no hesitation in recommending this publication which I will purchase myself.

Eat Right for your body type. Whether you want to lose weight or find a diet that chimes with your body type to bring you optimum health, Anjum's Ayurvedic Diet is for you. It s scarcely believable that Anjum Anand could ever have had a weight problem, but in her early 20s she was overweight and a serial dieter. She eventually lost all the weight but it took a while to discover the diet she should follow both to lose and to maintain weight loss. Finally, she found the solution, not from modern Western science or diet experts, but in the Indian system of Ayurveda the oldest and most holistic medical system on the planet. Translating as the science of living wisely and well , Ayurveda teaches us how to maintain optimum health and harmony both within ourselves and with nature. It recognises three body types and, once you ve established your basic body type, you can not only find the diet that will best suit you (and get your body back into shape) but also correct any imbalances to resolve eating and digestive disorders, sleep problems and many other illnesses. In this groundbreaking new diet book Anjum shows how to work out your body type, the foods you should eat (or avoid) and how to combine them into delicious recipes for every meal. Uniquely, this Ayurvedic cookbook includes recipes from East and West as well as complete food charts stating which foods are best for each dosha. For anyone purely interested in healthy eating the 75 recipes are all low fat and healthy, but each is labelled according to its suitability for each body type. Good eating hints and tips, a range of meal plans and advice on recommended exercise and lifestyle for each body type complete the book.
Anjum Anand grew up in London and Switzerland, and regularly visits family in Delhi and Calcutta. She is the presenter of BBC2 s Indian Food Made Easy and has also appeared on UKTV s Great Food Live. Indian Food Made Easy, published to accompany the first TV series, was an instant bestseller and one of the Top 10 bestselling cookbooks of 2007. Her next book, Anjum s New Indian, accompanied a second series of Indian Food Made Easy; to date Quadrille have sold almost 500,000 copies of her books. Author Location: London.

The River Tay Jan 3rd 2010

The River Tay today Jan 3rd 2010. I managed to drive out from Flisk, collect days of newspapers and much needed messages. On my way home, at Black-Earnside a family from Dundee were enjoying the delights of sledging from the road down to the riverside and as the Lady in the Picture remarked, "how nice it is to be out at play" also how thankful they were for having a 4x4 car to be able to get there.

Flisk North Fife Jan 2nd 2010

Flisk North Fife Jan 2nd 2010. It goes on and on, housebound and getting rather tedious, the road East and West have gradients of 1 in 10 curtailing journeys by car without 4x4 or snow tyres.

Across the River Tay to Dundee.

The readings are climbing pressure at 1008mb.Temp 0 degrees with 90%+ humidity.

There you have it just a wee bit better than watching paint dry.

Snow North Fife 2010

Snow, beautiful to look at, visually changing landscapes into Bruegelesque type scenes. The world becomes quiet, little movement. It's unusual to have snowfall so early in the year here in north fife if at all. The painting and posts below point to my meaning.

Hunters in the Snow, a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. There are records that he was born in Breda, Netherlands, but it is uncertain whether the Dutch town of Breda or the Belgian town of Bree, called Breda in Latin, is meant. He was an apprentice of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, whose daughter Mayken he later married. He spent some time in France and Italy, and then went to Antwerp, where in 1551 he was accepted as a master in the painter's guild. He traveled to Italy soon after, and then returned to Antwerp before settling in Brussels permanently 10 years later. He received the nickname 'Peasant Bruegel' or 'Bruegel the Peasant' for his alleged practice of dressing up like a peasant in order to mingle at weddings and other celebrations, thereby gaining inspiration and authentic details for his genre paintings. He died in Brussels on 9 September 1569 and was buried in the Kapellekerk. He was the father of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Both became painters, but as they were very young children when their father died, it is believed neither received any training from him. According to Carel van Mander, it is likely that they were instructed by their grandmother Mayken Verhulst van Aelst, who was also an artist.

Icicles, There is snow, a slight thaw from ambient house heat which then turns into ice.

Immobile.
Being immobile forces one into a kind of retreat, unable to travel and being without daily distractions, though hard, can be of great benefit, chance to examine oneself in a way described in the book below.

Reviews
A beautiful book, and worthy of the mountains he is among What began as a practical search for the rare snow leopard, revered Buddhist emblem, developed into a quest for the meaning of Being. An enjoyable combination of mountaineering and mysticism . Observer: It's a tale of an inner struggle for calm, and would be an inspiring and sustaining desert island companion As much the chronicle of an inner journey as it is the learned recording of an unfamiliar territory...a timeless account. Independent: An evocative account of a remote and timeless place and its people. Sunday Times: A magical book: a kind of lunar paradigm and map of the sacred.

This book is a story of two journeys of exploration. On one hand it is an account of an expedition by the world famous field biologist Georges Schaller to remote North Western Nepal in search of the fabled Snow Leopard.
The second journey is Matthiessen's personal journey of spiritual discovery amongst the Himalayan gompas of both Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion.
Combining a remarkable eye for detail in the flora and fauna of the journey with a deeply moving account of his personal spiritual discoveries, this book is a "must read" for anyone with even the slightest interest in what lies beyond the mundane day to day world.
It is also a detailed account of a world which was at the time of the expedition untouched by Western technology or values. A world which largely no longer exists. The Snow Leopard
