The Moon last night above North Fife it exerts a huge influence on our world, daily changing, on the seas, plant-life, germination, insects, fishes, animals, us, in fact just about everything.
The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth and the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System. It is the largest natural satellite of a planet in the Solar System relative to the size of its primary, having 27% the diameter and 60% the density of Earth, resulting in 1⁄81 its mass. The Moon is the second densest satellite after Io, a satellite of Jupiter.

 

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash. (Oct. 27, 2004) - The moon turns red and orange during a total lunar eclipse. With the Earth passing between the sun and the moon, the only light hitting the full moon was from the home planet's sunrises and sunsets, resulting in the orange and red hue.

World religions have in their calendars Moon Days of various phases. Notably full and New. In Astrology phases of the moon are beginning to be more recognised as influencing factors. I was enlightened myself in the early 70s by this book:-

 Phases of the Moon: A Guide to Evolving Human Nature [Paperback]The primary author of this classic astrology text was Dorothy Wirgin, whose name is listed third on the second page of this book. Wirgin was teaching psychology at the U of Colorado in the late 1960's and developed the overall idea of 'Phases' with Marilyn Busteed, an astrology student of hers. Richard Tiffany was a writer who helped put this rather complex subject together in good form. I first met Wirgin and Busteed at an AFA workshop on their book in the early 1980's. Their book has always had a fairly low readership, as have others on the same subject, such as Martin Goldsmith's 'Moon Phases', which uses a similar mathematical division of the moon phases.
The original inspiration for most astrology texts on this subject is 'A Vision' by the great Irish poet and statesman, W.B. Yeats. Although Yeats method of determining one's personal moon phase is unknown ( most likely he used automatic writing or some form of divination), the method found in this book for determining a moon phase based on one's natal chart works well. The delineations of each of the 28 phases is excellent, with added depth from Dorothy Wirgin's psychological insight.
Yeats claimed that the phase of the moon that one was born into had a great influence on ones' life, and that they indicated the sort of incarnation that one was living. This book is a wonderful addition to any astrological library, and can add great depth of understanding to any natal chart interpretation. Only one word of caution; this is 'graduate-level' astrology, and may take some perseverance from those who are unused to astrological convention.
 Well worth the study and can still be bought on Amazon, second hand priced very reasonably.

The Folk Art of Japanese Country Cooking: A Traditional Diet for Today's World

Japanese peoples are renowned for their longevity, this has much to do with their traditional diet and cooking methods.

Those who love Japanese food know there is more to it than sukiyaki, tempura, and sushi. A variety of miso-based soups, one-pot cooking (nabemono), and vegetable side dishes with sweet vinegar dressing (sunomono) are just a few of the traditional dishes that are attracting many interested in Asian cooking. Cooking methods include techniques for chopping vegetables, making udon and soba noodles, making tofu and using various tofu products, and making rich soup stocks. The first half of the book deals with the history and ingreadiants of Japanese country cooking. The second half has all the recipes. For some of the ingredients you will probably have to try an Asian market, but over all most of the recipes are pretty simple, healthy, and taste great. A lot of these dishes are also not the type of food that you will find at the typical Japanese restaurant, they are what you will probably encounter if you are lucky enough to be invited to someone's house for dinner in Japan.

Also nice is that many simple things such as how to cook rice in a pot or cut up a whole fish are covered for less expert cooks.

Gaku Homma, founder and chief instructor of Nippon Kan Aikido and Cultural Center in Denver, Colorado, is owner and head chef of Denver's highly acclaimed Domo restaurant. Well seen and stunning photographs by Chris Jordan. The Prix Pictet Commission is an invitation for one of the photographers short-listed for the Prix Pictet to document a sustainability project in a particular country or region. For the third Commission, Chris Jordan took photographs on a field trip to the Nakuprat-Gotu Conservancy in Northern Kenya, an initiative led by tribal Elders, which aims to bring peace and prosperity to a region ravaged by violence and climate change. Jordan’s photographs both document the problems - particularly the poaching of elephants - and celebrate the heroes and triumphs of what he calls a “quiet revolution” aimed at building a sustainable future for this community. Africa is perhaps the most romanticized continent, especially when it comes to nature and nature photography. "Ushirikiano" is a picture book depicting scenes from Kenya - its rural and tribal regions, as well as the environmental dangers that its residents and the wildlife are struggling with. The photographer Chris Jordan manages to capture the beauty of African landscape and life with a keen eye for the details that may escape many others as secondary or irrelevant - a rusting barrel on the side of the road, a colourful water reservoir, a digital wristwatch on a traditionally ornamented arm of villager, randomly scattered cloths on the grand inside of the scouts' house. These choices of subject matter give this book a distinctly journalistic feel. The most prominent photograph in this book is also the most disturbing one: it's a fold out four-page spread of a dead bull elephant carcass. It's an unsettling image of an elephant whose tusks and trunk removed. Its mutilated head has a nightmarish quality, and it brings home the horrors of ivory poaching. One of the aims of this picture book is to bring attention to the environmental degradation that this part of Africa is suffering due to climate change. However, aside from the gruesome pictures of elephant poaching (which could have in principle been taken at almost any point in Africa's long history) it is hard fro me to perceive the devastation that is alluded to in the book's introduction. The semi-arid landscapes that feature prominently throughout the book look just like the kind of landscape that have become familiar to the Western audiences form the decades of well-made nature documentaries. It is possible that the climate change has affected the aridity for the worse, but based on the photographs in this book it is hard to come to that conclusion. There is a lot to commend about this book in terms of pure aesthetic value. Chris Jordan manages to capture the people and their immediate environments very eloquently and beautifully. The contrasts between the colourful traditional garbs of African villagers and their more modern accessories create powerful dissonances that capture one's attention. Nonetheless, this is not entirely a feel-good coffee table book. It serves an important social purpose of creating awareness of the problems and challenges faced by people who live far away from us - both geographically and culturally. It is a tribute to the art of photography and to Chris Jordan's indubitable skills that a book like this one can bridge those vast distances and make its subjects feel more intimately close to us. Colin Prior is one of the world's leading panoramic photographers, celebrated for his images of wild places. His work has appeared in books, calendars and exhibits around the world. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1958, his proximity to the Highlands had a powerful influence that helped shape his passion for the elements.
